I almost thought today was a different looking line-up for the D-backs, as on the calligraphy scorecard, it had “Descalso 5” and “Nick Ahmed 6”. I always think 5 = shortstop and 6 = third-base, but it’s the other way around. I’m not sure why, since if you go around the infield, it’s first, second, shortstop, then third [unless you’ve got a shift on, of course]. Extensive research, i.e. two minutes of moderate Googling, couldn’t find a reason why shortstop and third are swapped in the numerical order like they are. It’s probably something to do with Henry Chadwick, who is usually credited with inventing the score-keeping system.
