Arizona Diamondbacks not expecting to have fans in stands when season begins

The Diamondbacks are not expecting to have fans in the stands at Chase Field when the season begins later this month, but they are planning conceptually for the possibility at some point during the year.

Diamondbacks CEO Derrick Hall said in a statement the “current circumstances in Arizona” make it unlikely that there will be fans on Opening Day. The state is trending in the wrong direction in containing COVID-19 spread, setting another daily record on Wednesday with 4,878 new cases reported by the Arizona Department of Health Services.

“We will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation as the season progresses,” Hall continued, “and we are preparing to provide the most safe and healthy environment for whenever the possibility of fans at Chase Field becomes a realistic option.
