Arizona Diamondbacks designate Jake Lamb, promote prospect Pavin Smith

Infielder Jake Lamb was designated for assignment on Thursday, effectively ending his tenure with the Diamondbacks three years after he slammed 30 homers and made the National League All-Star team.

Lamb has struggled mightily this year while receiving sporadic playing time. He was just 5 for 43 (.116) with one double and six walks in 50 plate appearances. He had started just three times in the past 17 games.

Taking his place on the roster is prospect Pavin Smith, whose contract was selected on Thursday. Smith was the No. 7 overall pick in the 2017 draft.

Lamb was a force in the middle of the Diamondbacks lineup -- particularly against right-handed pitching -- during the 2016 and 2017 seasons, hitting a combined 59 home runs with a .
