LAS VEGAS – The Diamondbacks departed here on Thursday morning having accomplished little more than they had when they arrived four days earlier.
For them, the winter meetings were far more active beneath the surface than they appeared from the outside. But they also were something of a planned respite following months of buildup to the trade of superstar Paul Goldschmidt.
“We kind of wanted to step back, anyway,” General Manager Mike Hazen said. “We focused so much of our time and energy in this offseason on the Goldschmidt trade -- I mean, pretty much every waking minute on it for the last two months.
