Merrill Kelly grew up in Arizona and was drafted out of Desert Mountain High school by the Orioles in the 37th round of the 2007 draft. Merrill opted to go to Yavapai College, Prescott, (where Curt Schilling also pitched), and was drafted again two years later, this time by the Indians in the 22nd round.
