Rick Tocchet will always remember the Stanley Cup championships and the game-winning goals, but the encounters he had with Phil Kessel around the breakfast table in Pittsburgh illustrate the type of relationship the two had on and off the ice.
Tocchet, who served as an assistant coach with the Penguins from 2014-17, said he often looked forward to a chipper greeting from Kessel in the morning. Kessel, who would sometimes refer to Tocchet as “Ricky,” enjoyed making playful comments as his coach warmed up to a morning coffee.
