Phil Kessel's goal with less than four seconds left in regulation time forced overtime, but the Arizona Coyotes, despite a late rally, fell in the overtime shootout 4-3 to the San Jose Sharks in the regular season opener Thursday night at Gila River Arena.
The Sharks scored the game's first two goals, for Tomas Hertl, before the Coyotes made it 2-1 late in the second period on Conor Garland's power play goal.
It was the first Coyotes game at Gila River Arena since last March, before the coronavirus stoppage of sports.
Evander Kane muscled his way around Jakob Chychrun and scored at 11:24 of the final period, for a 3-1 Sharks lead, but the Coyotes rallied.
