Coyotes' approach before trade deadline unclear

PITTSBURGH – Before the Coyotes embarked on their most challenging segment of the season, it didn’t sound like they were destined for a major overhaul at the NHL trade deadline.

Actually, if they were able to keep pace with the teams in contention for a playoff spot, General Manager Don Maloney made mention of the possibility of adding to the group.

Either way, heavy subtraction didn’t seem to be on the agenda after the Coyotes dealt key assets last season to begin a rebuild.

But after starting a five-game road trip that concludes Monday against the Penguins only five points shy of a playoff berth, the gap has swelled to eight points amid a 0-4 showing and a five-game losing streak overall.
