Arizona Coyotes, defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson reach agreement on contract extension

The Coyotes have reached a verbal agreement on a contract extension with defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson, NHL sources confirmed to The Republic on Saturday.

The terms of the extension are not known, but Hjalmarsson won't be eligible to sign a new contract until July 1, which is the first day of the 2018 free-agency period.

Hjalmarsson is represented by agent Kevin Epp, who also represents Coyotes defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson and goaltender Antti Raanta.

The Coyotes inked Raanta to a three-year, $4.25 million extension back in April, and The Republic reported on June 11 that the team and Ekman-Larsson had also reached an agreement on a contract extension.
