Terrible defensive performance headlines Cardinals' discouraging loss to Panthers

Kliff Kingsbury came to the Cardinals with a reputation as an offensive innovator whose teams at Texas Tech couldn’t play defense.

That label remains accurate and intact three games into his NFL tenure.

The Cardinals did some exciting things on offense Sunday against the Panthers. But they were tortuously bad on defense.

They allowed a backup quarterback, Kyle Allen, who grew up in Scottsdale, to enjoy a grand trip back home.

Allen, playing for the injured Cam Newton, looked like Patrick Mahomes. He passed for four touchdowns as the Panthers consistently made the Cardinals' secondary look silly.
