Cardinals pursuit of rookies continues post draft

There will be no sighs of relief and no champagne bottles popped in the Cardinals football offices when the draft ends on Saturday around 3:30 p.m.

Not every quality player will be among the 253 drafted, and by Saturday afternoon nearly every scout, assistant coach and front office worker in the Cardinals organization will be working the phones trying to sign rookie free agents.

“The problem is, other teams are doing the same thing,” said Terry McDonough, the Cardinals vice president of player personnel. “It’s speed dating.”

Former Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner wasn’t drafted. Neither were Hall of Famers John Randle, Warren Moon and Dick “Night Train” Lane.
