Arizona Cardinals release Andre Smith, Bene Benwikere; elevate Zane Gonzalez

A week after cutting starting cornerback Jamar Taylor for a string of poor performances, the Cardinals on Monday decided to do the same with veteran starting right tackle Andre Smith and cornerback Bene Benwikere, the team announced.

Also on Monday, Arizona elevated kicker Zane Gonzalez from the practice squad. The former Browns draft pick, who set NCAA career records at Arizona State, was signed to the practice squad last week.

This comes after the Cardinals placed kicker Phil Dawson on injured reserve, along with linebacker Josh Bynes.

Smith, 31, has dealt with injuries and inconsistent play for much of the season and turned out not to be the answer General Manager Steve Keim thought he would be when the team signed the 10-year pro to a two-year contract worth $8 million in the spring.
