INDIANAPOLIS – There is still plenty of scouting done at the NFL Scouting Combine, but the weeklong gathering is more than just testing and interviewing college prospects.
First, the fine print.
NFL rules forbid team officials to negotiate with the representatives of free agents from other teams until March 12, and deals can’t be signed until the league year begins on March 14.
But this week, downtown Indianapolis is filled with agents, general managers and other contract negotiators, so forbidding them to discuss deals is about as effective as telling your teenager not to throw a party while you’re out of town.
