ARLINGTON, Texas — Bailey Welch's two-run single and Kendall McGowan's three-run homer gave Appalachian State an early lead as the Mountaineers began their Saturday doubleheader at UTA with a 5-0 victory.
Colin Schmid scattered seven hits and struck out four batters in six scoreless innings, marking the eighth time in 12 starts this season that he's allowed two earned runs or less. Andrew Papp gave up three hits in three scoreless innings to pick up his first career save.
The Mountaineers, who won 2-0 against North Carolina A&T on Wednesday, claimed back-to-back shutout victories for the first time since the opening week of the 2011 season.
