BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University has notified the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Committee on Infractions of its acceptance of penalties for a rules violation committed by a former football assistant coach.
In June 2015, the university initiated an internal investigation into allegations that a former football assistant coach sent over 400 impermissible text messages in 2012-13 to the parent of a prospective student-athlete, a violation of NCAA Bylaw 13.4.1.2 (from the 2012-13 NCAA Manual) which limited electronically transmitted correspondence that may be sent to prospective student-athletes or their parents or legal guardians to email and facsimiles.
