BOONE, N.C. – After a neck-and-neck first four innings, Appalachian State University baseball was unable to overcome nine Troy runs scored over the remaining five innings, dropping the 11-3 rubber match on Sunday at Riddle-Pace Field.
The Mountaineers (19-29, 8-16 Sun Belt) were in for a pitching duel early on, giving up just one run in the first inning to the Trojans (26-21, 12-12 Sun Belt) and then taking a 2-1 lead into the fourth.
For App State on the mound was Luke Watts, who went 4.1 innings to start the game before Reed Howell provided two innings of relief.
