BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University’s 18 athletics programs each achieved an Academic Progress Rate score of 952 or higher in the latest four-year cohort, according to data released by the NCAA on Wednesday.
Implemented in 2003 as part of an ambitious academic reform effort in NCAA Division I, the Academic Progress Rate (APR) holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term. APR scores are based on a maximum of 1,000.
In the latest cohort (beginning with the 2011-12 academic year and ending with 2014-15), all 18 of Appalachian State’s varsity sports programs achieved a four-year APR of 952 or higher, comfortably above the 930 threshold needed to avoid penalties for insufficient performance, including postseason ineligibility.
