Rain drenches parts of Southern California; flood advisory issued

Unusually heavy rain battered parts of Southern California Tuesday morning, jamming the morning commute, causing scattered flooding and prompting the National Weather Service to issue a flood alert for the L.A. area.

Downtown Los Angeles received .93 inches of rain before 6 a.m., making it the wettest day in the area this calendar year with plenty more precipitation expected through the morning, said National Weather Service meteorologist Robbie Munroe.

Culver City received 1.2 inches of rain by 5 a.m., the Weather Service reported.

The NWS said area were seeing up to a third-inch of rain falling per hour.
