Don’t look in the usual places if you’re seeking Maui’s newest lodging. At 3,000 feet above sea level, it’s about an hour’s drive from the most popular beaches.

G&Z Upcountry Bed and Breakfast opened in August in Kula, on the slopes of Haleakala volcano.

Owner Marsha Wienert is the first to acknowledge that the one-bedroom suite, with a spacious living room and full kitchen, isn’t for everyone. But she said it’s ideal for travelers seeking solitude away from the hustle and bustle of the West Maui resorts.

“What we’re finding is that so many of our visitors are repeat visitors,” she told me.
