Mid-air emergency diverts Los Angeles-bound flight to Alaska

An international flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles was diverted to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska early Wednesday after the crew declared a mid-air emergency.

Cathay Pacific Flight 884 landed at Eareckson Air Station in Shemya about 3:30 a.m. local time, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The aircraft is a Boeing 777, the FAA said.

The airline did not immediately respond to request for comment. A blog that monitors air traffic around the world reported that smoke was reported in the cabin.

The aircraft landed without incident, according to the FAA.
