La Jolla beach reopened after Saturday shark closure

A popular stretch of beach in La Jolla that was closed Saturday after a shark sighting has been reopened, but swimmers and others are warned to be careful, officials announced Sunday morning.

After the sighting of an 8-to-10-foot hammerhead shark was confirmed by video taken by kayakers, lifeguards ordered the beach from La Jolla Cove to Scripps Pier closed at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Although lifeguards searched by boat and helicopter, no additional sightings of a shark were made.

At 7 a.m. Sunday, the beach was reopened but will remain under a "shark advisory," said Lee Swanson, spokesman for the San Diego Fire & Rescue Dept.
