Fans gather at L.A. Live rally for World Cup champion U.S. women's soccer team

Members of the U.S. women's national soccer team will be honored Tuesday with a rally in Los Angeles in their first public appearance since winning the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Coming off its victory in Vancouver, Canada, the 23-member team will greet fans at the L.A. Live entertainment complex next to Staples Center. The free public celebration begins at 11 a.m.

A handful of soccer fans had already gathered at L.A. Live by 7 a.m. Tuesday, ready to meet the newly minted champions.

The women’s team routed defending champion Japan in a 5-2 victory Sunday, bringing home a record third championship and the first Women’s World Cup title since 1999.
