Anaheim started the game shorthanded due to a minor penalty call against Nick Ritchie. The Canes were able to rattle off six shots in the first two minutes of the game, but the Ducks were able to kill it off. The Canes would only get 5 more shots in the period, most of those being pretty textbook stops. With a few minutes remaining, the shutdown 2nd line kicked off the scoring for the Ducks as Cogliano smacked home his own rebound. Immediately after, Vatenen lost his stick and footing and was forced to take a minor penalty giving the Canes their 2nd man advantage of the period.
