Carjacking suspect barricaded in South Gate shoots at police; neighbors evacuated to center

Police have opened up an evacuation center in South Gate as an armed carjacker who shot at police refuses to leave his home, authorities said Monday.

Armed with a handgun, the man carjacked a driver Monday morning and abandoned the vehicle not far from his home in the 10600 block of Capistrano Avenue, said South Gate police Capt. Darren Arakawa.

Officers who found the car and were looking for the suspect were met with a “volley” of gunfire from the man’s home, Arakawa said. No officers were injured in the shooting.

Police immediately closed down the neighborhood, called in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department tactical team and have a crisis negotiator trying to talk to the man to bring about a peaceful ending, Arakawa said.
