4 die as Typhoon Soudelor hits Taiwan; 46 inches of rain in one city

Typhoon Soudelor made landfall on Taiwan before daybreak Saturday, lashing the island with torrential rain and winds up to 129 mph and leaving at least four people dead and nearly 2 million without power.

Schools and businesses were shut Saturday as the powerful storm moved westward across the island. Taipingshan, in Yilan County on the island’s northeast side, got 46 inches of rain in less than 36 hours, the Central Weather Bureau reported about 9 a.m. Saturday.

Among the dead were a young girl and her mother, who were swept out to sea; the girl’s twin sister was also missing, the Central News Agency reported.
