Maurice Smith rejoins Miami's active roster

The Miami Dolphins returned safety Maurice Smith to their active roster on Tuesday after he'd spent the first two weeks of the NFL season on their practice squad.

When the Dolphins reduced their 90-player preseason roster to the regular-season limit of 53 on Sept. 1, Smith made the cut. But on Sept. 3, Miami waived the defensive back to add offensive tackle Sam Young to the roster.

When Smith cleared waivers the next day, the Dolphins signed him to their practice squad. Every NFL team has a 10-player practice squad whose members practice with the team but can't play in games.
