Low-pay, high-snap NFL players receive performance-based supplements

New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler was the hero of Super Bowl XLIX and earned Pro Bowl selection for the 2015 season. But the former West Alabama standout got paid like an undrafted free agent in the second year of his three-year rookie contract last year.

Butler had a salary of $510,000 for the 2015 season. But he received a supplement of $319,282.65 in performance-based pay.

The NFL Management Council announced the performance-based payments for the 2015 season last week.

The performance-based pay program provided $3,802,500 to each NFL team for distribution to its players.
