Nick Saban personally would have driven Maurice Smith to Athens, Ga., over the summer if Alabama's coach knew how this thing would play out.
You remember Smith, right? He's the former Alabama defensive back who had a hard time transferring to Georgia last summer. After graduating from Alabama with a year of eligibility left, Smith wanted to join former Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart at Georgia. Saban blocked Smith's transfer until the SEC granted a waiver allowing Smith to play immediately for the Bulldogs.
Funny how things turned out.
On Saturday at Sanford Stadium, Smith returned an interception for a touchdown against Auburn that helped clinch the SEC West for his old team.
