Chizik opted to go a different way, ultimately deciding on assistants best suited to help him transform one of the worst defenses in the country.
“Didn’t know any of them. Never met one,” he said in a recent interview in his office. “I had to struggle with: Do I want to hire guys that I know, or do I want to hire guys that after I go through the interview process are the best guys?
