Two decades ago, Pittsburgh introduced Slash to pro football. Kordell Stewart was the Steelers’ utility playmaker early in his career, a blend of quarterback/running back/receiver/returner so undefined it could only be characterized by all of the slashes.
This season, the Pittsburgh Panthers have extended star receiver Tyler Boyd’s role to one filled with a handful of slashes, too, adding some quarterback and running back to a position that already includes return duties. No. 5 Notre Dame, which travels to Pitt on Saturday (noon ET, ABC), is preparing for all of Boyd’s roles.
