Makeover for Coastal could buoy whole ACC

Something funny happened to the most-mocked Power-5 division during silly season.

It got good. Perhaps really good.

While the ACC Coastal may not be confused with the SEC West just yet, the division made the biggest splashes of the coaching carousel, hiring three established names to help resurrect three programs with varying degrees of history.

Virginia Tech turned to Memphis’ Justin Fuente. Miami turned back the clock with fired George coach Mark Richt. And, in perhaps the biggest surprise of last week, Virginia scooped up Bronco Mendenhall from BYU, announcing the move Friday evening.

Throw in Larry Fedora’s announced contract extension with North Carolina just before kickoff of the ACC title game, in addition to the strong work by first-year coach Pat Narduzzi at Pitt this fall, and the Coastal may be the one getting the last laugh before long.
