White Sox believe Alex Avila 'has potential to improve us'

The White Sox continued their offseason overhaul Wednesday, signing catcher Alex Avila to a one-year, $2.5 million deal.

Avila battled a bone bruise in his left knee in 2015, limiting the 29-year-old to 67 games with the Tigers. He hit .191 with four homers and 13 RBIs. His best year came in 2011, when he was named an American League All-Star and Silver Slugger Award winner, batting .295 with 19 homers, 33 doubles and 82 RBIs.

“Alex gives us a veteran presence behind the plate who provides solid defense and a productive left-handed bat,” general manager Rick Hahn said in a press release.
