How Jose Quintana’s faltering command exposes his predictable approach

Down 2-1 in the count to Hunter Renfroe on Sunday, facing his first real jam of the afternoon with runners on first and third with no outs, Jose Quintana went to old No. 1.

Unsurprisingly sitting fastball while ahead in the count, Renfroe reached out for a 92 mph fastball up and away and lifted it just enough to land in the Padres bullpen in right field. After the game, Quintana wasn’t happy about the pitch, but not because he was particularly worried about the game theory at play — it was just in the completely wrong place.
