Interview with Cristina

Why do you follow teams like Monterrey FC and the Mexican National Team?

I’m actually from Mexico! A lot of people are shocked when I tell them this but always have to show them a little of my Spanish speaking skills and after shocking them even more, they believe me. It’s always a comical experience. I follow Monterrey FC because I am originally from Monterrey, Mexico and despite the city rivalry I was born a “Rayada” mainly because of my dad and plan to stay that way.

So, if you’re Mexican, why the Spanish team interests?

I fell in love with FC Barcelona in summer of 2007 when I was taken to Spain for my 15th birthday to visit different stadiums around Spain. I visited the famous Camp Nou and when those elevators opened and I saw that beautiful green pasture and the words on the bleachers that read “Mes Que Un Club” (More Than a Club) my heart skipped a beat and I told my dad that I will become a huge fan. I am actually now an official FC Barcelona member (hopefully I’ll get to show off my socio card).

Most celebrated goal?

Champions League semi-final in the 08-09 season. Barcelona vs. Chelsea when Andres Iniesta scored that gorgeous last second goal that put us into the final, which not only gave us the Champions League trophy but also meant that we had just become the first Spanish team to ever win 3 trophies in one season. I’ve never cried over a goal scored by my own team until this moment came, my dad said I literally stood up and ran a few laps around my house before my brain could really understand what had just happened. Yeah, I can be a bit crazy at times.

Most disappointing moment in soccer?

I am a Liverpool fan, so you can imagine my reaction when Fernando Torres signed unexpectedly with Chelsea in 2011. It is, however, satisfying to see (I know, I’m horrible) that he is doing so badly with them. So badly, in fact, that Chelsea coach Villas-Boas has threatened to kick him off the team if his goal drought continues. He also missed a completely open goal the other day against Manchester United which made me laugh quite a bit...

Favorite FC Barcelona player?

The one and only, Xavi Hernandez. The backbone to Barcelona’s midfield is definitely inspiring to me on and off the field. His inspiration to me off the field reminds me why I’m so in love with the sport because his creativity and vision for the game are incomparable. On the field, I try to adapt many of his creative ideas, which has definitely helped me in past seasons to have better vision.
