It was a surprisingly quiet offseason for the Washington Redskins, but there's still plenty of intrigue surrounding the team. Here are three position battles to watch throughout training camp:
3) Outside linebacker
Trent Murphy and Preston Smith, both of the Redskins second-round picks in the last two years, are competing for the starting right outside linebacker role. Ryan Kerrigan is locked into the left outside linebacker role, but Murphy and Smith are neck-and-neck in a true competitiong to be the starter.
2) Tight end
Jordan Reed would have established himself as the unquestioned starter by now if he could just stay healthy, but that has been the biggest issue surrounding the third-year man. Niles Paul's potential has coaches excited, and could overtake Reed as the starter if he continues to impress throughout the preseason. Logan Paulsen is the best blocker of the bunch, but is clearly behind the other two.
1) Backup QB
With the team committed to Robert Griffin III as the starter for Week 1, Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy are battling it out for the No. 2 spot. Head coach Jay Gruden admitted that neither player was happy with his decision to go with RGIII, but both understand that whoever wins the backup job has an excellent shot at starting should Griffin falter or get injured, as has been the case the past two years.
