Virginia Elena Carta of Duke Blue Devils, USC Trojans lead NCAA women's golf finals

EUGENE, Ore. -- Duke freshman Virginia Elena Carta opened a six-stroke lead Sunday in the NCAA women's golf tournament and Southern California topped the 15 team qualifiers.

Carta, from Italy, shot a 6-under 66 at Eugene Country Club to reach 13-under 203 and break the 54-hole record of 9 under set by Grace Park of Arizona State in 1998 and matched by Jennifer Rosales of Southern California in 1998, Virada Nirapathpongporn of Duke in 2002 and Annie Park of USC in 2013.

"I'm feeling really good," Carta said. "I actually didn't get it the first time they told me (about the record), but now that I know, it's awesome, but the next 18 holes are going to be tough.
