UTEP starts spring with battle for backup quarterback

Backup quarterback isn’t the most important position on a college football team until it is.

UTEP received a pleasant reminder of that last season when they discovered that was a big team strength with Calvin Brownholtz, who was pressed into action late and played well enough to get a pro shot in Italy.

His departure leaves the backup spot bare from an experience standpoint, no one past Gavin Hardison has been in a Division I college football game, and a big emphasis of this spring, which began Monday with the first of 15 practices, is preparing to change that.
