3 baseball players drafted to major leagues

Forty rounds and 1,215 picks.

As the 2017 MLB Draft began June 12, prospects from coast to coast awaited their selection and a chance to make it to the big leagues.

In previous years, the UTA Baseball program had 58 players selected in the draft, including John Lackey, a three-time World Series champion and Chicago Cubs pitcher, and Hunter Pence, a two-time World Series champion and San Francisco Giants right fielder.

This year, the program added three new names to that list: senior pitcher Austin Gardner, senior catcher Brady Cox and junior pitcher Jakob Hernandez.

“It’s always a great reward for those guys to get a chance at professional baseball,” head coach Darin Thomas said.
