USC true freshman Cameron Smith will start at middle linebacker for the Trojans on Saturday against Arkansas State, an unusual circumstance for what is considered a demanding position.
Smith received less publicity than fellow freshmen linebackers Porter Gustin and Osa Masina, but got a break because senior Lamar Dawson broke his ribs in training camp and will not play against Arkansas State. It also helped Smith that he enrolled early and participated in spring drills.
“I’m excited coming right out of the tunnel (at the Coliseum) and seeing everybody there,” Smith said Tuesday. “It’s going to be an experience of a lifetime.
