LOS ANGELES – USC offensive coordinator Clay Helton said Tuesday that the decision to hand him the play-calling duties had been in the works for the better part of a year.
Coach Steve Sarkisian announced the change Saturday, saying he would delegate the majority of those responsibilities to Helton, who also coaches the Trojans’ quarterbacks. Some theorized that Sarkisian had been ordered to give up play-calling after his incident at “Salute to Troy.” Athletic Director Pat Haden said Monday that he wasn’t involved in the decision. Helton said he and Sarkisian talked about it soon after they began working together in December 2013.
