LOS ANGELES >> USC coach Andy Enfield held one reason for optimism.

“We can’t shoot terribly every game the entire season,” Enfield said. “Eventually the law of averages has to work out.”

The principle held true.

The Trojans broke out of their recent shooting slump, making 14 3-pointers, including seven from guard Elijah Stewart, to equal a season high in an 82-79 victory over Arizona State on Sunday night. It evened their record to .500 in conference play and snapped a two-game home losing streak.

It was a much-awaited breakout.

Three nights earlier at the Galen Center, USC remained vexed by its shooting struggles.
