Vector officials warn larger mosquito population means increased risk of West Nile virus this season

Orange County officials are preparing for the possibility of increased incidents of West Nile virus because of a weather-driven surge in the mosquito population this year.

So far, there have been no incidents of West Nile virus in people or dead birds reported in the county in 2017. County vector control, however, is working with cities, primarily in North Orange County, where most West Nile cases have been reported since 2004.

“We are coming up with an escalated outreach plan to inform residents about West Nile,” said Mary-Joy Coburn, public affairs coordinator with the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District.
