UCLA takes itself down a losing path in opener against Monmouth

After UCLA's last shot clanged off the back of the rim, Thomas Welsh crouched over near the paint. Tony Parker twisted his uniform until the bottom hung near his shoulders. Bryce Alford began to walk off the floor at Pauley Pavilion in disbelief.

It was hard to question his shock. UCLA wasted a 13-point second-half lead, then a five-point overtime lead, to lose a stunner to Monmouth, 84-81, in the season opener.

UCLA seemed to sleepwalk through the first half. The Bruins didn't miss many chances to turn the ball over. They coughed up the ball, passed to the wrong team and lost control on dribble-drives.
