Saltalamacchia designated for assignment

It was a short reign for the man with the long name.

The Blue Jays brought in veteran catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia this season to give the club some offensive upside when regular catcher Russell Martin was given a day off. But Saltalamacchia couldn’t get anything going at the plate, so the Jays designated the 31-year-old for assignment on Friday and recalled Luke Maile from triple-A Buffalo. The Jays threw Maile right into the fire Friday night, starting behind the plate with Marcus Stroman pitching.

“When we brought Salty in, we were looking for some offence, some power (and) we weren’t getting much of that,” Jays manager John Gibbons said.
