Fantasy Baseball Preview: Catchers

Buster Posey of San Francisco Giants has been the fantasy standard-bearer for the catching position the past few years. And while, at 30, he is still the safe pick to go in the early rounds as the first catcher off the board, the more daring fantasy owner will bypass him and go with Yankees’ young Gary Sanchez, who was a record-shattering revelation after his July callup last year. He should lead all catchers in home runs — challenged only by Yasmani Grandal of the Dodgers — but we figure his .299 AVG will be hard to repeat. Throw in Jonathan Lucroy, who hit 11 homers in just 152 at-bats after being acquired by Texas from Milwaukee at last year’s deadline, and these are the four guys you’ll want to grab early as the fantasy potential thins out after that in what, once again, looks like a thin crop of backstops.
