Yale ruins Rico Gathers' shot at March legend status

One of the best things about the NCAA Tournament — the list is long and grows by the year — is that it stamps names, permanently, in the overall sporting conscience with an element of randomness that differentiates it from everything else.

We remember NFL All-Pros and left-handed starting pitchers and really good NBA sixth men in part because we spend so much time with them. They're around for years, consistently. That's part of why we know their names.

March Madness is different, though; we — as in casual college hoops fans — meet these guys, they do something that sticks with us, and then each year, we can use the first two days of the Tournament as an excuse to rummage through that box.
