Tapwrit captures the 149th running of the Belmont Stakes

Tapwrit won the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown, on Saturday at Belmont Park in New York.

Irish War Cry and Meantime set the pace for much of the race.

Tapwrit moved into second in the stretch and Jose Ortiz moved him to the lead deep in the lane.

The winner was trained by Todd Pletcher. It was Pletcher’s third Belmont winner. He also trained Kentucky Derby champion Always Dreaming/

Irish War Cry, who finished 10th in the Kentucky Derby, was sent off as the favorite in the 1 1/2 miles “Test of a Champion.
