Rio Olympics 2016: Katie Ledecky destroys own world record with gold in 800 freestyle

The longer the swimming distance for Katie Ledecky, the more dominating her performance. But Ledecky's swim in Friday's night's 800-meter freestyle in Rio took it to another level.

In typical Ledecky fashion, the 19-year-old blew her competition out of the water, opening up a 2.59-second lead at the 200-meter mark and building on her lead every 100 meters until she touched the wall with a new world-record time of 8 minutes, 4.79 seconds. She broke her own mark of 8:06.68 set earlier this year.

With the win and defense of her Olympic title, Ledecky's unbeaten streak moved to a perfect 15 for 15 in individual events at major international meets.
