On College Football: Jockeying Continues, and the Playoff Picture Remains a Blur

After Louisiana State’s 19-7 victory against Texas A&M, players hoisted Coach Les Miles on their shoulders. He interrupted an on-field interview to sing along to the alma mater — “And may thy spirit live in us, forever” — before he was asked about the crowd that was chanting his name, in recognition of widely circulated reports that Miles was about to be fired.

“I have always loved this place,” Miles said. “It’s nice to be” — he paused — “reviewed.”

The theater metaphor was quintessential Miles. All of college football’s a stage, and all its coaches and players merely, well, players.
