NCAA's busted justice system needs a 'near-death' penalty

Rick Pitino has money. This is no secret. Precisely how much is between him and his accountant, but whatever the figure, it’s enough that he could live in great luxury without ever serving another day as head basketball coach at Louisville or anywhere else.

It’s enough that if he were empowered to use some portion of his wealth to buy the 2015-16 Cardinals squad out of their self-imposed NCAA Tournament ban, he certainly could without discomfort. And I believe he cares enough about his players that he would.

When you hear Pitino declare the NCAA justice system is broken, which he did in a postgame press conference following Saturday’s victory over Boston College and again in an interview with Seth Davis of Sports Illustrated and CBS Sports, know that he is correct.
